How to Report Harassment on X

A good report is short, specific and points straight at the posts that break a rule.

Short answer

To report harassment on X, open the post (or the profile), tap the three-dot menu, choose Report, pick the category that fits best (such as abuse and harassment, hateful conduct, violent speech or private information) and follow the prompts. Save post links and screenshots first, and block the account after reporting if you need to.

Key takeaways

  • Report the specific posts, not just the account, so reviewers see the evidence.
  • Pick the closest category. X's menu wording changes over time.
  • Bystanders can report many kinds of abuse on behalf of someone else.
  • Threats of violence should also go to local police.
  • Keep your own dated record; it matters outside X too.

How do I report a post on X?

Use the three-dot menu on the post, choose Report and follow the prompts.

  1. Open the post. Copy its link from the share menu and take a screenshot before you do anything else.
  2. Tap the three dots in the top corner of the post and choose Report post.
  3. Say who the post targets (you, someone else, a group).
  4. Pick the category that fits best and answer the follow-up questions.
  5. If X offers to attach more posts from the same account, add the other examples.
  6. Choose whether to mute or block the account when X offers.

To report an account rather than a single post, open the profile, tap the three dots and choose Report.

Which category should I choose?

The one that matches what the posts do, not how they make you feel.

What happened Closest category
Repeated insults, targeted abuse, encouraging others to pile on Abuse and harassment
Attacks based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability and similar Hateful conduct
Threats to hurt or kill, wishing harm Violent speech
Home address, phone number, ID documents posted without consent Private information
Intimate images shared without consent Non-consensual nudity
Encouraging suicide or self-harm Suicide or self-harm
Someone pretending to be you Impersonation (separate form)
Bots, fake engagement, scam links Spam

X renames these from time to time. If a label doesn't match exactly, choose the nearest one.

What should a report say?

Who, what, when and the exact links, in a few plain sentences.

The block, mute or report helper builds a report summary from your notes: the account, the category, when it started, the post links and a short description. Paste it where X asks for more detail, or use it in an email to an employer, school or the police.

What happens after I report?

X reviews the posts against its rules and may remove them, limit their reach, lock the account or suspend it.

You'll usually see updates in your notifications or support inbox. X doesn't publish a fixed response time. If nothing changes and the behavior continues, report the new posts too. A pattern is easier to act on than a single post.

Where else can I get help?

Outside X, the people around you, local police and specialist organizations can help.

If the harassment involves someone you know offline, keep records outside X as well: dates, other platforms, messages. For threats and stalking, the police are the right first call. For emotional support, a trusted friend helps more than you'd think. Stepping away from the app for a day or two is a perfectly good move.

Questions people ask

Will the person know I reported them?

X does not tell the reported account who reported it. They may guess, especially if you were the only person in the conversation.

Can I report multiple posts at once?

When you report an account, X lets you attach several of its posts to the same report. Use that for a pattern of harassment rather than filing one report per post.

What if X says the post doesn't break the rules?

Mute or block the account, keep your evidence, and report again if the behavior continues or escalates. Repeated, targeted behavior can break the rules even when a single post doesn't.

Should I contact the police?

Yes if you receive a threat of violence, someone shares your home address with hostile intent, or you are being stalked. Bring your saved links and screenshots and a short written summary.
